Mason County
Mason County is named for its own Fort Mason, a military fort from the 1870s, now a historic site and museum. If you like to step back in time, visit the Odeon Theater, which opened with the classic German silent film ‘Metropolis’ and continues to operate today. The county’s 4,222 residents mostly live in the city of Mason, with small populations in the smaller communities of Pontotoc, Fredonia, and Art. The Llano River and Comanche Creek both wind through the county; the Llano is a good river for paddling, especially in the early summer, or when rain is abundant.
